REVISION NOTES

IGCSE Edexcel Chemistry

4.6 Carboxylic Acids

4.6.1C Know that carboxylic acids contain the functional group -COOH

The functional group of carboxylic acid is -COOH

edexcel_igcse_chemistry_topic 26_carboxylic acids_001_carboxylic acid functional group

4.6.2C Understand how to draw structural and displayed formulae for unbranched-chain carboxylic acids with up to four carbon atoms in the molecule, and name each compound

edexcel_igcse_chemistry_topic 26_ carboxylic acids_002_carboxylic acids diagram

4.6.3C Describe the reactions of aqueous solutions of carboxylic acids with metals and metal carbonates

REACTION OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS

  • Carboxylic acids dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions
  • So it can react as an acid

carboxylic acid + metal → salt + hydrogen

carboxylic acid + metal carbonate → salt + H2O + CO2 (bubbles are formed)

4.6.4C Know that vinegar is an aqueous solution containing ethanoic acid

VINEGAR

  • Aqueous solution containing ethanoic acid
